Seven Sheffield breakfasts, starting with a £5 snag roll

Sheffield does breakfast best in its cafés and bakeries, and these seven say what to order, what it costs and when to turn up.

At Elm on Glossop Road, the same kitchen that cooks a Michelin-listed tasting menu at night sells a pork-and-black-pudding snag roll for £5 in the morning. That’s Sheffield breakfast in one plate: much of the best cooking before noon happens in cafés and bakeries rather than hotel dining rooms.

How we chose: each café’s own current menu, the Michelin Guide, and Exposed’s 2026 reader awards.

One omission needs explaining. Caffè Tucci, the Capasso brothers’ Italian café on Surrey Street, has just won Exposed’s best café award for a third year running, for its panini and sfogliatelle, but it publishes no prices, so it isn’t listed below.

Tamper Coffee

Order the Big Kiwi (£16.80): Yorkshire sausage, belly bacon, mushrooms, beans, a rosemary hash brown, corn ribs and two eggs, served in a whitewashed 19th-century silversmiths’ works on Arundel Street. Waitrose Food magazine praised its “sunny eclecticism of Antipodean breakfast culture”. The French toast (£13.50) is the other dish people come back for. The kitchen shuts an hour before the doors. Restaurant Elm (coffee shop)

Nathan Wall’s restaurant turns into a coffee shop by day, from 8am on weekdays. Beyond the snag roll, have the slow-roasted pork belly bagel (£10) or the O.G. grilled cheese on sourdough (£7). The Michelin Guide added Elm as a new entry this year; dinner is a tasting menu, Wednesday to Saturday. Glossop Road, Broomhall · bagels £9–11 · Mon–Fri 8–3, Sat 10–3, closed Sun · walk-in

Made by Jonty

Fourteen years of all-day brunch on Sharrow Vale Road, and no reservations. Order the breakfast burrito (from £8.75) or eggs Benedict (from £8.25), and come early at weekends. On Wednesdays and Sundays it shuts at 3pm. Sharrow Vale Road · eggs Benedict from £8.25 · walk-in

Forge Bakehouse

Start with a Portuguese custard tart, which costs from £2.40. Forge has baked on Abbeydale Road since 2012, and the White Peak sourdough loaf (from £2.95) is the one to carry home. Its coffee turns up in other kitchens too, including in a dessert syrup at Silversmiths. There’s a branch at the station for anyone with a train to catch, open from 7am. Abbeydale Road · custard tart from £2.40 · Mon–Fri 8–3, Sat 8.30–3, Sun 9–3 · walk-in

South Street Kitchen

Above the city at Park Hill, this vegetarian café won Exposed’s vegan and vegetarian award in 2024 and 2025. The hummus plate (£13.90) is the dish to order; eggs on toast is £9. On Fridays and Saturdays it stays open for dinner until 10.30pm. Park Hill · hummus plate £13.90 · Mon–Thu 9.30–3.30, Fri–Sat to 10.30pm · book

Lovely Rita’s Bakehouse

Everything is vegan, and there’s no counter to queue at: you pre-order and collect from Stag Works on Friday or Saturday between noon and 3pm. The batch and bun with a filter coffee costs £5. Pom Kitchen stocks the pastries if you miss the slot. John Street, Highfield · batch and bun £5 · Fri–Sat 12–3 · pre-order

The Schoolrooms

Out at Low Bradfield, about 10 km west of the centre, the village school closed in 1985 and reopened as a café in 2011. The Bradfield Breakfast (£17) is the walker’s plate, with black pudding, beans and bloomer toast; a bacon bap is £6. Food runs 9am to 4pm every day. Low Bradfield · Bradfield Breakfast £17 · walk-in, book Sunday lunch

Checked October 2026.
