Breakfast in Newcastle, from a 7am bao hatch to a 90p Greek pie

Six places to start the day in Newcastle, cheap ones first, with the thing to order at each and the times to turn up.

Kalimera’s miniature filo pies cost 90p each, the cheapest breakfast on this list. The rest goes up from there, through a bao from a hatch and a toastie BBC Food filmed this month, to weekend brunch in the Ouseburn. Most of these places are small and walk-in only, so the time you arrive matters as much as the order.

How we chose: places named in 2026 by local writers, BBC Food or a national coffee list, each still trading with a menu or opening hours to go on.

Kalimera

Aldo Hasani and Dina Mero opened their Greek bakery on Gosforth High Street in May 2025, took over the upstairs within four months, and opened a second, smaller shop on Nelson Street this spring. Dina makes the pies in filo, not shortcrust or puff, with fillings like spinach, chicken, and potato and feta. Buy two of the 90p mini pies and a Greek iced coffee, and take a piece of baklava for later.

Pablo Eggsgobao

Emma Dent started selling breakfast baos from a pop-up in Heaton during lockdown in 2020, and on 1 June this year Pablo’s opened a hatch on Pilgrim Street at 7am. The menu stays short on purpose. Get the breakfast bao: hash brown, pork patty, melted cheese and soft omelette with a sweet and spicy sauce, in a soft bao bun.

The Camera Shop

On Collingwood Street, next to the Vampire Rabbit, the Camera Shop doesn’t look like a sandwich shop from outside. This month Harriet Fisher of BBC Food stopped there on a local’s tip and ordered the breakfast toastie, streaky bacon with mozzarella, harissa, roasted tomato and “posh ketchup”. Get there before the lunch queue.

Pink Lane Coffee

Across the road from Central Station, Pink Lane has been pouring coffee for 13 years, and in April it was the only North East shop on The Best Coffee Shops’ UK 2026 list. It roasts specialty single origins and sells them on subscription. Expect a queue, because the shop is small.

Quay Ingredient

Under the Tyne Bridge on Queen Street, this small café takes no bookings, and a seat on a weekend morning is the hard part. It does a full English, eggs Benedict several ways and French toast, but the order is crumpets with baked beans, the combination ChronicleLive’s Simon Duke says he had never seen before he ate it here. It serves lunch too.

Cook House

Anna Hedworth’s Ouseburn restaurant opens for brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until noon only. Prices run from £5 for sourdough toast to £14 for baked eggs with smoked trout, and the trout is the reason to cross town. On Sundays the kitchen moves on to roast chickens at noon, so arrive early.
